Does anyone not know of the Annabelle doll? Even if you do not watch horror you have seen her being advertised. Here she is. The movie implies she is a highly collectable Victorian porcelain doll. These photos show her at her best .
.
She gets more and more hideous as the film franchise progresses. She was just creepy from the start.
She first appeared at the beginning of The Conjuring (2013) from Warner Bros. She had only one scene and was to introduce Lorraine and Ed Warren, a husband -wife team of paranormal investigators into the movie. But the most striking and talked of feature in the movie was Annabelle. She was too disturbing and ghastly to forget about. With the studio realizing they had a surprise star; Annabelle had her own spinoff movie and was in the Conjuring 2 movie. In 2017 she was well established in the horror franchise with Annabelle-Creation and in 2019 Annabelle Comes Home. Another Annabelle movie is in development.
The beginning of the Conjuring was based on truth. In 1970, two college girls did take a doll into their home not knowing they unleashed a sinister force within the doll. The Warrens took the doll named Annabelle into their custody. Even on the trip to their home several times Ed Warren felt the steering wheel suddenly jerk and try to turn. The brakes failed to work. Expecting trouble, he said he stopped the car and threw Holy Water on the doll which settled her down until they got her home. She went immediately into a wooden display case where she has stayed locked up for several decades. She is considered extremely haunted and dangerous. The Warrens have passed away, but their daughter Judy and her husband Tony Spera oversee Annabelle and the museum of cursed artifacts.
What is the real Annabelle? The horrible entity responsible for the death of at least two people?
A lovable and innocent looking Raggedy Anne Doll. The most popular and best-known rag doll of all time.
The producers of The Conjuring said she did not look scary. She is not supposed to be. The real reason for the drastic change is Hasbro owns legal rights to the Raggedy Anne assets and they were not going to let one of their prized toys appear in a horror film.
So that ghastly Annabelle was created which is not actually a doll but defined as a movie prop. You can buy an Annabelle doll from Mezco or Haunted Closet.
Raggedy Anne has a long history. She started in 1915 when Johnny Gruelle started a series of storybooks for his daughter. He illustrated these books ,50 stories in all, starring a rag doll he found in his parents’ attic. He called her Raggedy Anne after a poem called The Raggedy Man and added a brother, Raggedy Andy. He patented this doll and her popularity took off.
P.F. Volland launched the dolls and books to children for 14 years. She transferred to Georgine Novelties, then Knickerbocker Toys until she was acquired in 1983 by Hasbro. In 2012 a partnership with Aurora started to relaunch and reboot the Raggedy Anne merchandise.
By 1940, Raggedy Anne books and dolls exceeded $7 million and are still a popular childhood doll and collectable.
The haunted Annabelle lives in Monroe, Connecticut since 1970 in custody of Ed and Lorraine Warren. They were also head of the New England Society for Psychic Research. Her daughter Judy and her husband Tony Spera are now in charge when Lorraine passed away in 2019. The tours continue but no longer at the Warrens home because of zoning issues. They charge $169 which includes dinner at a local restaurant. Annabelle and several artifacts are on display during the 4-hour event. People have said they have seen Annabelle’s head moving, such as nodding or her eyes flash. Sometimes it looks like she is breathing .Lorraine loathed the doll .
These two videos are the most interesting. One is a tour of the haunted artifacts. There is a grass roots movement to make a series around how the artifacts were acquired and how are they cursed. The second vid was in 2017 Annabelle being moved to a new fortified portable container. You can see they are taking the threat of her seriously. Judy and Tony turned down offers as high as two million. The doll is not for sale at any price.
